Symptoms
Symptoms of diabetes can include:7, 8
- Increased thirst and urination
- Increased hunger
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands
- Sores that do not heal
- Unexplained weight loss
Treatment and management of type 1 diabetes
Although there is currently no answer to what triggers type 1 diabetes or how to prevent it, the condition can be treated effectively. Treatment for diabetes varies between different people. Since a lack of insulin production is the factor causing type 1 diabetes, treatment for it involves administering insulin via injection or a pump. Patients also need to monitor their blood glucose levels frequently to ensure they remain within a target range. It is important to balance insulin doses with food intake and physical activity. The personalised treatment and management plan for each patient is determined and discussed during regular consultations with healthcare professionals.2,9
Treatment and management of type 2 diabetes
While treatment for type 2 diabetes also varies between people, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, increased physical activity, and a healthy body weight is central to type 2 diabetes management. Over time, oral medication may be necessary to keep blood sugar levels under control. When oral medication is not enough to control blood sugar levels, people living with type 2 diabetes may require insulin treatment.6
