Urostomy Nutritional Advice
Unless your healthcare team gives you specific instructions, people with a urostomy do not need a special diet. However, there are a few tips you may want to keep in mind to avoid infections and urine odours, such as drinking at least 48-64 ounces (6-8 cups) of water and other fluids per day.
You may want to limit certain foods that cause urine odour, including1:
- Asparagus
- Fish
- Eggs
- Alcohol
- Vegetables, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and brussels sprouts
- Cheese
- Baked beans
- Onions
Some foods help fight urine odour. You may want to increase your intake of the following foods:
- Cranberry juice
- Buttermilk
- Parsley
- Yogurt
